Canada’s best artistic gymnasts to converge on Halifax for the 2016 Elite Canada competition

Wednesday, September 23, 2015 - 12pm

OTTAWA (September 23, 2015) – Gymnastics Canada is pleased to announce that Halifax has been selected as the host city for the 2016 Elite Canada Artistic Gymnastics Competition. The competition will be hosted by Gymnastics Nova Scotia, Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club, Taiso Gymnastics Training Centre, and Titan’s Gymnastics and Trampoline Club and will be held at the Canada Games Centre from February 4th to 7th, 2016.

Elite Canada is one of the primary meets at which national team status is determined and brings together the top athletes from across Canada from the novice, junior, and senior categories. In men’s artistic gymnastics the event will help to finalize the national teams for the coming season and will determine Sport Canada AAP carding status of the senior team. In women’s artistic gymnastics, gymnasts in the novice, junior, and senior categories will seek qualification for High Performance status, which gives them the right to compete in those categories at Canadian Championships and to be eligible to be considered for national teams and potential international assignments.

“As we prepare for the Olympics in 2016, every competition in Canada that has the participation of the senior team will be used to consider the eligible athletes that will go to Rio. This event will feature our top athletes who will be getting themselves ready for the final push towards that ultimate goal,” said Karl Balisch, Program Director for artistic gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada.

“We are excited to be hosting this National event in Nova Scotia,” said Angela Gallant, Executive Director for Gymnastics Nova Scotia. “This will give our high performance athletes the privilege to compete at home and it will be an excellent opportunity for supporters to see local athletes such as Ellie Black and Hugh Smith compete as they continue their quest for the 2016 Olympic Games.”

“Our club, Halifax Alta along with others in Halifax are very excited to be hosting Elite Canada 2016,” said five-time Pan American Games medallist Ellie Black. “It’s great to bring the highest level of gymnastics to Halifax for many young athletes to be able to see and be inspired.”

“I don’t know how many times as an athlete I have been asked by my friends and family if I will be competing anywhere nearby and my answer has always been no,” said Hugh Smith, a member of the men’s artistic gymnastics senior “A” team who trains with fellow national team member Ellie Black out of the Halifax Alta Club. “I’ve had so much support from my club, city, and province and it will feel great to be able to perform in front of them in Halifax and to have them cheering for me at home.”

More details on the event will be posted as they become available on www.gymcan.org.
