Canadian Gymnastics Week - A Week of Gymnastics Fun for Everyone

Friday, February 10, 2017 - 3am

OTTAWA, ON (February 9, 2015) – Gymnastics Canada is pleased to announce that February 12th to 18th has been proclaimed Canadian Gymnastics Week. Celebrated annually nationwide, the theme for this year’s event is: “Gymnastics for all; Gymnastics for life!” and will focus on highlighting the seven fundamental movement patterns of gymnastics.

A joint initiative between Gymnastics Canada, the provincial/territorial gymnastics federations, and over 700 Canadian gymnastics clubs, the week is held each year to increase awareness of the sport, and to celebrate the positive benefits of gymnastics in all its forms.

“Canadian Gymnastics Week is a time for gymnastics to shine and to be recognized for what it is, and I think this year’s theme encompasses just that. It’s the foundation sport, and it doesn’t matter who you are or how old you are – gymnastics is beneficial to everyone,” says Peter Nicol, President/CEO of Gymnastics Canada.

Each day of the week will feature one of the seven fundamental movement patterns, starting with swings on Sunday, February 12th. Then it’s on to springs, landings, static positions, locomotions, rotations, and finally object manipulation on Saturday, February 18th. Participants are encouraged to share pictures and videos of themselves doing these skills on social media to create a community of gymnastics in Canada.

Some of the clubs, provincial and territorial federations, and Gymnastics Canada are holding their own contests and events during the week. One of the prizes to be won is two weekly passes to the FIG 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Montreal this October, and can be won by entering Gymnastics Canada’s photo contest with the hashtag #CDNGymWeekContest.
