Monday, February 8, 2016 - 4pm

Halifax, NS – Local gymnasts captured 13 medals at the Elite Canada Gymnastics Competition at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax over the weekend.

Olympic gymnast and hometown favourite, Ellie Black (Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club) won Silver Medals on Vault, Beam and Floor and she took the Bronze in the All Around Senior Women’s category.

In the women’s Novice competition, Jillian Langille (TAISO Gymnastics Training Centre) won a Silver medal in All Around and also captured Silver on Beam.

In Senior Men’s Competition, Hugh Smith (Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club) was a crowd favourite taking home 3 medals.    He won Gold on Floor and Vault and earned Bronze on Rings.  Shun Tomizawa (Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club) also captured 2 medals in Men’s Senior winning the High Bar competition and placing 2nd on Floor.

In the Junior Men’s category, Alex Watters (Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club) captured Bronze medals on pommels and floor.

The Elite Canada Competition was organized by Gymnastics Nova Scotia, Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club, TAISO Gymnastics Training Centre and Titans Gymnastics and Trampoline Club.  This is the first time this event was held in Halifax and there were capacity crowds on each of the 3 days of competition.  The 3 Halifax clubs involved in the organization of the event had 20 athletes registered for the competition and it was a great opportunity for these high level gymnasts to compete at home in front of family and friends.
