NS Gymnasts win 12 medals at Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships

Waterloo, ON – Nova Scotia gymnasts Ellie Black (Halifax) and Matthew Brown (Dartmouth) earned a combined 9 medals at the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships that wrapped up on Sunday in Waterloo. 

Matthew Brown of Dartmouth, had an outstanding Canadian Championships winning the Junior (14-15 year old) All Around competition on Saturday.  Brown also won Gold on Rings, High Bar, Parallel Bars and he captured Silver on Floor bringing his medal haul to 5.  He was 4th on Pommels and Vault.  In Junior (16-17 year old), Vincent d’Entremont of Halifax captured Bronze on Parallel bars and placed 7th All Around.

The Nova Scotia National Open Men’s Team combined to win the Bronze team medal on Friday.  The bronze medal winning National Open team was made up of Miguel Hernandez (Halifax), Ryan Lowe (Westphal), Andrew Gallant (Dartmouth), Landon Duquette (Middle Sackville), Jeremy Sutherland (Middle Musquodoboit), Isaiah Jarvis (Dartmouth), Alex Miller (Halifax) and Flynn Gurnsey (Halifax).  Miguel Hernandez also captured bronze on Parallel Bars in the National Open men’s division.

In the Senior men’s competition, Evan Cruz (Halifax) was 5th on Pommels and 8th on Parallel bars and Jeremy Bartholomeusz (Halifax) was 7th on High Bar and 7th All Around.

On the women’s side, Halifax’s Ellie Black captured her 5th consecutive All-Around Senior title on Sunday, just a day after being named the Support4Sport Women’s individual athlete of the year by Sport Nova Scotia.  Black also won Gold on Beam and Uneven bars and Silver on Floor. 

In the Junior women’s competition, Jordyn Ewing (Hammonds Plains) placed 7th on Uneven bars and 10th All Around.  In the JO 10 (16+) category, Tehya Benjamin (Halifax) finished 8th on Beam.

Nova Scotia had 26 athletes competing in 2 disciplines (women's artistic gymnastics and men's artistic gymnastics) throughout the 4 days of competition.
